TrueCrypt for Mac is a program to establish and maintain an 'on-the-fly' encrypted layer medium / device. 'On-the-fly' encryption means that data is automatically encrypted or decoded just before loading or saving without any user interference.
No data stored on an encrypted device can be read (decoded) without using the correct password / key file or encryption key. The entire file system is encrypted (eg file name, folder name, content of any file, free space, meta data, etc.). Even without a password to log on to windows, anyone with your PC in your hand (stolen or hacked into your PC via the network) can access your files. There is only one way to secure and even data on, namely encryption. This means that when the thief or another unauthorized person opens the files, etc., he just sees a lot of random characters that nobody can make sense of. That is, your key to online banking, personal letters, private pictures etc. is hidden both for reality and the digital robbers. TrueCrypt creates an artificial drive, which is actually a file that is encrypted. The drive works like any other hard drive; but you can only access it by entering a personal password. Windows attaches a drive letter to the file, so it can be found in Explorer. Then Windows will forget the code again when the PC turns off, after which you can transfer the artificial drive to a USB key or burn it to a CD. In addition to the security that others can not find a way to your privacy without the correct password, TrueCrypt is designed such that a forgotten password also equals the underrun of one's files on the encrypted drive so it's very important to remember / Keep track of his password. The same applies if you uninstall TrueCrypt from your PC. However, it can be solved by installing it again. External devices such as DVDs, USB keys, and the like can only be used on PCs where TrueCrypt is installed or where the device is installed at the installation (can be corrected later).
